Don't Run Out of Gas

Stay Safe, Comfortable and Never Run Out of Gas!
Propane is a very safe and efficient fuel. However, for safety reasons you NEVER want to run out of gas! "Will Call" customers need to know when their tanks are getting low to avoid certain risks and inconveniences. It's a good idea to call us when your gauge reads between 20 and 30 percent. If you are on the "Keep Full" or automatic delivery program and have added a gas appliance or increased your usage FPU would appreciate a call. This will help us better determine your needs and track the accuracy of our delivery forecasting system. Please give us a call if you need help reading your gauge, if you have any questions, or if you would like to be on our Automatic Delivery program!

Tank Gauge Reading
The numbers on your gauge tell you the percentage of gas remaining in your tank. The gauge to the right, for example, shows a tank that has 20% of its propane left, based upon the total amount it can hold. Note: You should never allow your tank to fall below 10% capacity.

To find out how many gallons you have left, simply multiply the percentage on your gauge by your tank size. For our example above, that would be .35 X 250 = 87.5 gallons left. Make sure you know your tank size (usually 150, 250, or 500 gallons).

SPECIAL NOTE: If you ever smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off all the gas at the tank and your gas appliances. Open the area to fresh air. Do not do anything that could cause a spark, leave the premises immediately and contact FPU.

If You Run Out Of Gas
Letting your propane container run empty creates additional hazards. If you run out of gas and lose pressure in the system, a potentially hazardous condition can result. If you do run out of gas, follow these steps:

  • Turn off all control valves on all gas appliances.
  • Turn off the shutoff valve on the propane container(s).
  • Call your propane supplier to arrange for delivery, and advise them you are out of gas.
  • Don't turn the gas back on yourself. Let the propane supplier do it. When you schedule your fill, be sure it is for a time when you will be at home, so the propane supplier can relight and check your appliances and system to assure that they are operating properly and are leak free.
  • Immediately after your tank is refilled, have a service technician check to see that all safety controls are functioning properly and the piping system is leak free.

Access to Your Meter

FPU professional meter readers read your meter regularly.

Our meter readers have learned to read a meter as quickly and accurately as you can read your watch. However, to read your meter, they must be able to get in. To make sure that your bill is based on an exact reading each month, please don't let dogs, locked doors and gates, shrubs or other obstacles keep our meter reader away from your meter.

If we are unable to get to your meter, we estimate the amount of gas you used. Any inaccuracies in the estimate will be corrected in the bill for the following month. Since we read more than 98 percent of our meters every month, billing based on estimates is rare.

Your meter is a precise measuring device that meets strict government standards. We also check your meter regularly and repair it when necessary. As an additional safeguard, our computer compares your bill with the month's weather patterns, current gas rates and the billing history of your residence.

If you have any questions or would like advise on reading your meter, just contact us.
