Gas Safety
After years of service in over 40 million American homes, natural and propane gas have an impressive record of safety. Modern gas appliances are equipped with many features to make them safer and more convenient to use. When properly installed and maintained, these appliances are among the safest on the market today.

Another factor that increases the level of safety of gas is the ease by which a gas leak can be detected. It may come as a surprise to you, but natural gas is completely odorless in its original state. A distinctive odor is added to gas to make it easy to detect. The odor smells similar to rotten eggs.

What To Do If You Smell Gas

If you think you may have a large gas leak, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have everyone leave your home immediately.
  2. Do not operate light switches, your telephone, or any electric appliances.
  3. Do not connect or disconnect any power plugs from electric outlets.
  4. Do not light a match or lighter.
  5. From a neighbor's phone, call FPU Emergency Services immediately.

When the problem has been corrected, call FPU. We will turn on your gas and relight your appliances.
